Blog Post 5 part B

When starting this class I was very unsure of PLN. I didn't really grasp it all. This class has taught me if I do not know the answer I can always ask Twitter or look at many reliable sources on the internet.
Blogging in the beginning was not very fun or interesting, but as the class went on I found myself looking at outside blogs and getting great ideas or lessons from them. Some of my main PBL's are Twitter, Pinterest, and blog.com. I love Twitter because you can get very reliable answers in a matter of minutes. If you hashtag on twitter it is great because you can see everyone who has used that same hashtag. Pinterest has many ideas that you can share and also follow the person that shared that idea. It is great to follow all the people that have the same interest because you can see their ideas to help you with things that you are having trouble with. Blog.com is just a fun site to share stories about life, jobs, struggles, etc. I have found blogging very relaxing and fun. Getting to share your experience with others of the same interest is a great feeling and getting feedback is even better. There are many PLN's that are used often these are just my person favorite. From this class, I have learned many ways to get my information quick, reliable, and easy.

Teaching our Children can be a Profession
By: Joel Klein

In this article, Mr. Klein lays down some hard hitting facts about what has happened to the education system in recent years. Mr. Klein chooses three big problems he sees in the education system today and discusses his ideas on the areas of problem and gives his solution.

Problem 1: The education system does not choose the best candidates available to go into the field of education.

Solution: The education system needs better academic training for students, pick from the top one-third of graduates, and change how teachers receive rewards.

Problem 2: The education system has been keying in on seniority instead of the progression of students and the effectiveness of the teacher.

Solution: Create an exam for entry and certification yearly much like in professions of law and medicine.

Problem 3: The education system is in dire need of a change.

Solution: Teachers must establish a board that polices the teaching profession and allows teachers to move up by the results and their choice to take and pass examinations.Remove the idea of a mandatory school assignments and allow teachers to pick what is best for their students.

With problem number one, I do happen to see and hear a lot about the lack of quality teachers and how it is hard to get quality candidates to go into education. In my mind, one of the best ways we can ensure that the profession does get the best candidates available is by raising the pay scale for teachers and educators and allow the to make more because we will get what we pay for with our teachers.

Problem number two is one of the biggest issues in the education system. There are so many teachers who are in better schools based only on seniority and not on progression of students. Not all teachers are like this but problem still remains. I do like the idea of certifications for teachers but I believe that they should be mostly evaluation based instead standardized tests because just because teachers can learn for a test does not mean they can apply it in the classroom and it allows teachers to be critiqued based on their everyday work.

Problem three is kind of like Mr. Klein's conclusion. At this point we can kind of tell that Klein is almost to the point of disgust with the system. I love the idea of allowing teachers to pick their own assignment because we as educators must understand that all of our students will not go into the same profession and must be allowed the free choice to learn other things than a strict criteria.

In conclusion, I believe Mr. Klein made some great points and has some great ideas on where the education system should go and how it needs to be changed. I hope that I one day can be as influential in education as he has been. With more and more teachers trying to find a way to change and make education better the more students will benefit. I truly treasured Mr. Klein's article and hope one day I can help implement them.

The day starts with us getting to school, and we line up on the blacktop. At 8:15 am, we go in to our classroom and check our supplies, get out homework, copy down homework, and then start to do morning work on our desks. Then, we start a round. At 8:50, we do Morning Meeting. After that, we jump into math. We check the morning work, and then we get to the lesson. At 10:30, we then start Social Studies. We learn about trades in the old days. At 11:05, we go to lunch. We come back at 11:50, and then we do Listen to Reading. Next, we do writing, where we do our Jamestown vs. Roanoke piece. At 1:15, we go out to recess and come back in at 1:30. After that, we do either science or Biztown. Finally, at 2:30 we start to clean up and get out at 2:45.
That is what we do on an average school day

Hi Daniel. I am a student at the University of South Alabama. I enjoyed hearing how your day is planned out at school, when I was your age I had a schedule that was close to that. It was very nice to read your blog. Have a great rest of the school year!

This first quarter is almost over because this is the last day of the first quarter and I will tell you what happened. It has been the first quarter since the beginning of the year and so far we have learned so much and done so many projects. Most of the projects we did were in science: like testing gobstoppers in different liquids such as nail polish remover, like me and my friend Emily did. And we also made different weather detectors such as barometers, and rain gauges, ect. I am ecstatic to finish the rest  of the year.
This year is much much better than last year. I have made more friends and learned more about the Catholic faith. It is interesting to learn about because I am Lutheran and so now i know much about the difference between both faiths.  I am a novice at writing this year large paragraphs and stories in language. Language is one of my most favorite subjects because I get to practice my writing and I love writing books.
I am about to write a new book about a girl named Lilly that finds out her school is closing down their playground because there is sand hornets there.  Lilly finally finds out a new chemical-like solution to get rid of the sand hornets as the school thanks her for her free choice of the school to go to a field trip anywhere she would like. She decides they should go to  a art museum. As they get to the museum they stroll around for a bit as Lilly finds out something suspicious. She finds one of the painting’s important character is missing. She goes there a week later with her parents and finds out that it is in a different painting by the same person and tells somebody at the museum. Soon they fix it and she is thanked by the museum and earns something very special. What could it be?
Thank you for reading my newest blog. Please mention any ideas i could put in my newest story!

Hi Leah! I am a student at the University of South Alabama. I loved hearing about your story. One of my favorite things to do is sit in a quiet room and think about what to put in my next story. It sounds like you have a great book ahead of you. Keep up the good work!!!

Project 12 Part B

Blog Post 13

On this post I want you to tell how technology  can be used in special needs classes or why it can not be. You will give reasons why or why not, and the pros and cons of both. I would like you to list the programs you would use if you did use it in the classroom or the programs you would not use in the classroom. How would you monitor the students on the internet and guide them where they are going? Please explain how you would minimize the damage to the devices?

I think and have observed technology in the special needs school. In my observation at Augusta Evans, the children use SmartBoards to play educational games. Also, iPads will be soon arriving at the school for the children to use. The teacher will be given a few iPads to make stations with. In Augusta Evan the children have a computer lab where they go and learn to how to type their name and address. Once the children have completed their daily task they are allowed to play educational games for 15 minutes. I spoke with a teacher there and in her class she is going to make sure the students are monitored by an adult at all times when they are using any technology.  The iPads will have very tough cases on them but these students can be very dangerous and violent, so they will be monitored. For the computers and iPads there are programs such as, K9 Web Protection. K9 Web Protection forces safe search engines on all major search engines. It  Blocks web sites in more than 70 categories, including pornography, gambling, drugs, violence/hate/racism, malware/spyware, phishing. It is the best free parental control software/ internet filter available.

Back to the Future

Brian Crosby is a genius among teachers and should be renown as a leader and founder in project based learning. Crosby is a teacher who is full of energy and takes project learning to a whole new level by keeping all the students engaged in the lesson. For example, Mr. Crosby had a new student transfer to his class who had cancer, when talking to the administration, they explained that the student probably would not be in class much due to the low tolerance immune system of the student. Crosby took that as a challenge and allowed her to learn with the entire class through Skype. Another thing I learned from Crosby is that as teachers we can take project based learning across subjects and is especially easy in elementary school when the teacher teaches all the subjects to one group. Crosby also teaches his students pride in that they even though they are "at-risk" kids that they can do extraordinary things and do anything they set their minds to just as they are leading the country in this new kind of learning.

Blended Learning Cycle

Paul Anderson blended learning ideas kind of make a scientific method to learning by using the acronym QUIVERS.
QUestion- Start the class with something interesting and fun to get their minding churning and begging to learn about the hook.
Investigate/Inquiry- Learn about what the hook is about and formulate a way to better understand like how the disk rotates on the mirror.
Video- Watch a video individually to learn more about the topic in question
Elaboration- Relearn and learn more about the topic and grow the knowledge on it to create a better project
Review- Review the material one on one with the teacher to ensure the knowledge is learned by explaining the topic to show understanding.
Summary Quiz- a quiz used to re-review the material on the topic.

Making thinking visible

This video shows how to show students how their thinking works and how as they understand more their ideas will reflect it. The video shows an exercise where students write a headline of what they think the project is all about and as they go through the project they learn more and at the end the teacher asks the students to make another headline then the groups compare their first headline to the ending headline and can see the progress in their learning.

Super Digital Citizens

This video teaches another aspect in how kids learn in that they learn as they teach and when they teach others they learn the material twice once in their prep work and another when they are teaching the material to the classroom. In this video, the students are learning about online safety show others how to be safe on the internet by making this superhero that helps make good decisions on the internet. The students in the video learn how to be safe on the internet, how to teach others in their class, how to use certain programs, and how to help others use the internet safely.

Project based learning

This video elaborates on an idea learned earlier which is combining classes with like subjects to make one big project that covers more material than all three classes combined did before. I like the idea of combining subject this allows students who are not as strong in some areas to make up for it in others which in someways hurts the students because they limit themselves in what they are comfortable in. For example, a student who is good at math but not at English will do the math part of the assignment but not the proofreading and visa-versa this allows students the easy way out where as before students had to learn each subject. To me, I like both methods but I'm not sure which is best traditional or PBL.
